Getting into the Christmas spirit, huh?

Getting into the Christmas spirit, huh?

More than fun and traditions…

One of America’s favorite Christmas television specials is A Charlie Brown Christmas. It opens with Charlie pondering what Christmas is about. He’s been doing the same traditions he has always enjoyed about the holiday, like decorating and sending greeting cards, but Charlie’s depressed and doesn’t understand why he just can’t get into the Christmas spirit this year.

Many of us can relate to Charlie Brown’s difficulty getting excited about Christmas when we grow up and the magical quality of Christmas fades. As adults we do lots of things to replicate that special feeling we got as kids this time of year. We decorate the house with festive lights and ornaments, bake our favorite cookies, play the classic songs, watch A Christmas Story, and throw holiday parties in hopes of getting that Christmas feeling. (By the way, this is just my personal list. I happen to enjoy all of the above.)

More than a feeling…

But the question remains… What is the Christmas spirit anyway? Is it just a case of the warm and fuzzies? Well, we recognize the Christmas spirit in Ebenezer Scrooge’s change of heart at the end of A Christmas Carol; when the Grinch returns the Christmas goodies to the Who’s down in Whoville; when the townspeople show up to support George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life; and when Buddy’s dad walks out on his career to put his family first, in Elf.

Think of the most heart-warming moment in your favorite Christmas movie, and I’ll bet it involves a character who puts aside his or her own wants, needs and hang-ups to serve others.

Love thy neighbor

These movies reflect the world’s desire for more love, humility, generosity, and kindness, so it’s easy to see that the “Christmas spirit” actually embodies God’s commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves.  And where I come from, it seems like most people do their best to live out this sentiment at Christmas time. People in the grocery store are uncommonly kind and patient with one another. Charities receive more donations in the month of December than the rest of the year. We give generous gifts, call loved ones, and travel great distances to spend time with family and friends.

But even with these great intentions, people generally slip back into business as usual when the holiday season is over. The world is starving all year long for “peace on earth, goodwill toward men” (excerpt from Luke 2:14, KJV), and in their heart of hearts, they know it! But they just don’t know how to live that out on a daily basis. Let’s face it—it’s tough to lay down our own selfish desires and do for others as we would have them do unto us. The Apostle Paul even struggled with this: “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do–this I keep on doing.” …“Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.” (Romans 7:19, 25.)

Getting into the Holy Spirit

The world is literally dying for a Deliverer; to be released from bondage to sin and death.  If we want the world to know the Truth and the Life they desire to see at Christmas time, we need to show them the Way. It will take our continual transformation into the likeness of Christ—whose wonderful birth we are celebrating. The world needs this modeled for them. They need to see that the “Christmas spirit” is not just a sappy ideal in our favorite Christmas flicks, but a Life that can be lived out with the transforming power of the HOLY Spirit. Take heart. When you boil it down, Jesus’ formula was pretty simple:

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:12-13)

I want to end by telling you my favorite Christmas movie moment. In A Charlie Brown Christmas, the gang ridicules Charlie Brown for picking out a humble little tree for their play instead of the glitzy, commercially-glorious tree they wanted. Charlie cries out in frustration, “Isn’t there anyone knows what Christmas is all about?!” Linus replies, “Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.” Then Linus takes center stage and recites Luke 2:8-14 to remind the Peanut Gang why we celebrate Christmas.

Transcript: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'”

Salvation and healing in Fremont

Salvation and healing in Fremont

This past week a couple of our team members felt strongly that we needed to press even more deeply into prayer, crying out for the city and the things we wanted to see happen. We did this as team and spent time every day interceding for Fremont and the people we were going to encounter. As we did this, we began to see a real difference in our times out visiting homes. We saw a greater hunger in people’s hearts to talk with us, to hear the Gospel, and to receive prayer.

There was one day in particular where it felt like our team had no closed doors. Our teams were warmly welcomed and even invited into homes of those who wanted to be blessed and wanted to know more about Jesus. Many of them even blessed our team in return with little gifts, food, or drinks! Their small acts of hospitality and generosity reflected a softness toward the Lord and a deep desire to receive the peace of Jesus into their hearts. These were the ones who were most receptive.

“ Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’  And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.” Luke 10:5-6

Rooted in that place of prayer, miracles accompanied us as we went out and proclaimed the Gospel.

And these signs will accompany those who believe… they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:17-18

One of our teams spent some time talking to the father of a Catholic family in the area. At first he was unsure of our team because of his opinions about different denominations. They explained to him that they did not represent a single denomination and that the most important thing they held to was the unchanging Word of God. After hearing this he was extremely welcoming to prayer and he even asked them to pray for his handicapped daughter who was bound to a wheelchair. After they prayed they felt led to ask her to take a step of faith.

They asked if there was something that she could try to do that she couldn’t before. She said that she had never been able to raise more than a few inches out of her chair. So they asked her to, in faith, attempt to stand and even take a few steps. She was miraculously able to stand up fully, and even walk around the room!

They asked when the last time was that she had done that and her father replied in awe, “never”.

Our friend in Fremont shares her experience…

Hi, my name is Lidia and I had the beautiful privilege of partnering up with YWAM to evangelize the streets of Fremont. I love going with YWAM because as I am walking and going door to door, I think about the book of Acts and the Word of God comes to life as I am experiencing it.

Let me briefly share a praise report as my friend and I went out evangelizing. When we knocked at one particular door, a young girl answered.  After introducing ourselves to her and chatting for a little while, we found out that she was a high schooler. I asked her if she had ever heard about Jesus. “A little,” she replied.

So, I started sharing the Gospel with her. After sharing the Gospel, I asked if she wanted to have a relationship with Jesus.  She said, “YES!” So I led her in the sinner’s prayer.

As she was praying and asking Jesus to forgive of her sins her father was standing in back a few feet from her.  I was hoping the whole time that he would not step in and interrupt this important moment. So after she prayed, I prayed and thanked our Father in heaven for revealing Jesus. We finished praying and the beautiful young peaceful girl walked to the living room with all her materials, Bible and DVD.

Then the father came to the door.  We introduced ourselves to him and told him we were there to bless the neighborhood. He began to tell us that it was a good thing we were. So we asked him, “What can we pray for?” After a few minutes of listening to him about all his political concerns, we asked again if we could pray for him.  I told him I wanted to bless his heart of compassion because he was truly concerned about the world. At that moment he told us he was a Muslim.

At that point I just thought, “wow, the Lord had definitely had a shield around that young girl.”  Nothing interrupted this young lady from receiving salvation. Amazing! Only can the Holy Spirit orchestrate such an awesome thing.

Anyway, the father gave us permission to pray and as I prayed, I shared the Gospel through the prayer and I was amazed he did not stop me. He was very happy we were there and thanked us.  I hope we can visit with them soon.  So this is what God does when we just take that step of faith.

Please continue to pray for our team for health, boldness, wisdom, deep compassion, and open hearts in those that we meet. We cannot wait to see what the Lord does in our last week!

Fremont: Surprise Healings

Fremont: Surprise Healings

Commentary from our Fall DTS Students…

Our first week here in Fremont has just come to a close, and we already have many stories to tell!

For most on our team, this is their first time doing door to door evangelism, and they are rocking it. We have the privilege of partnering with multiple local churches who are excited about getting involved in reaching out to their communities. Two of them are offering us a place to stay for the duration of our time here, while others are encouraging their members to come out and do evangelism with us. This weekend, we had a huge response from the church where we have been meeting and launching our daily outreaches from. It was such an encouragement to get a large number of reinforcements: 50 people on Saturday and 78 people on Sunday! Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn provided a huge boost for our team!

We offer 3 gifts to every home: a Bible, prayer, and the gift of salvation.

Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and people from many different belief backgrounds are found throughout all of Fremont. All the same, God is moving powerfully inspiring people to have a real hunger for the truth of God and His Word. We do everything we can to encourage people to seek after God and we pray every day for salvation to come to Fremont.

On Saturday, we had two different testimonies of healings! One of our groups met a teenager who had injured her knee badly while playing basketball just an hour before. They asked if they could lay hands on her and pray. She had an awed look on her face when she said with surprise that all the pain in her knee was gone! The group then had the opportunity to share with her a little about Who had just healed her.

In another case, we knocked on a door where a middle-aged Chinese woman would not even open the door completely to us. We gave her a Bible through the crack and after a few minutes of talking she agreed to come out and let us pray for her back pain. We laid hands on her and began to pray. As we prayed, we felt heat flood her back. When we finished and asked her to test it out, she exclaimed that all the pain had left. She was smiling broadly and happily accepted the Jesus film and an invitation to church.

God is moving powerfully inspiring people to have a real hunger for the truth of God and His Word.

Praise God! He is so amazing!

We are stoked that we can be here and see God working in peoples’ lives. Please pray that we will see people fully accept Christ during our next week!

From Redding to Los Angeles!

From Redding to Los Angeles!

The last two weeks have been a wild ride! We are so proud of this DTS for stepping out of their comfort zones and into the promises of God.

Last week, we were blessed to learn about the “Father Heart of God” from Redding’s own Claude Bonjour. Claude touched us all with many stories of how God displays his parental heart, both from the Bible and from personal memory. The Holy Spirit revealed many misconceptions of God that we had been believing, ushering in fresh revelations of His love for His children.

You see, our God is not only the Creator of the Universe, not simply our King, Judge, and Shepherd – He is also our dad.
He yearns to hold his children, to beckon them back into the embrace of redemptive acceptance, and, in return, He longs for us to recognize the massive family into which we’ve been adopted! He protects his kids, teaching them and molding their hearts through both happy and difficult circumstances.

He is such a good, good Father, and He so desires for us to know Him as such. That being said, it was an honor and a privilege to witness our Father adopt one more brother into the family just a few days ago!

During our weekly Thursday evangelism, one of our groups met a homeless man sitting alone on the streets of Redding. Over the next 45 minutes, they listened to him pour out his story, asking him where He believed God acted in his life. Tears and laughter ensued before our team got to share the Gospel with him, a motion that resulted with him accepting Jesus!! God is so good!

This week, our team is down in Los Angeles, CA for a “track week,” where we are spending the days in sessions, evangelism times, and workshops – all intended to strengthen our heart for worship!

We kicked off the week with a night of teaching from Joy Dawson, an honored “matriarch” of Youth with a Mission, who blessed us with a motivating discussion on our role to end human trafficking. Hearts were were stirred, eyes were opened, and prayers were activated as we interceded fervently for those in captivity. We are so thankful for this time with Joy.

Today, we also had the privilege of hearing from Lou Engle, a veteran revivalist and prayer warrior. He imparted so much wisdom and inspiration to us through stories of God’s faithfulness in his life, as well as his incredible call to move the world into prayer and fasting for America. It was an honor to hear from this man of God, and I know all of us left the session with renewed fire for our nation – the cry to turn America back to Jesus is louder than ever!

Final Week in France: Desire for Truth

Final Week in France: Desire for Truth

Hello again, everyone!

We want to thank you again for your support and prayer for all our team is doing in France!

We passed out many more Bibles this week, we preached to so many, and we’ve prayed fervently for this city as we have led people to the Lord Jesus! 🙂 Here is one story from a time of evangelism…

We had just finished performing our dance and preaching the gospel, and I (Samantha) saw a woman walking by us. She seemed to be in a hurry, but I felt the Lord direct me to talk with her. I interrupted her brisk journey and asked if she had just a couple minutes to speak with me. She accepted, and I proceeded to tell her who I am, where I’m from and why I am in Marseille. We ended up conversing for over 30 minutes.

After informing me of her Muslim faith, she began to give her stance of what she believed, but I could quickly tell that her heart was actually hurting…she was sad about what she believed. She thought God was very angry and a murderer, and I began to gently tell her the truth of God’s character – the Gospel.

The love of the One and Only True God profoundly disarmed this sweet woman of her bitterness. She asked me vulnerable questions, fervently seeking Truth, and I gave her answers straight from the Bible. She admitted that she’d stopped believing because of the evil she’s witnessed in the world; she had questioned why God would allow suffering and assumed the God she had been trusting had let her down.

I told her boldly and kindly that the true God is Jesus, and that He is not the same god that Islam claims. She went from a state of anger, intensely backing up her beliefs, to telling me “I want to believe everything you’re sharing with me…I want Jesus in my life. If I believed and followed Jesus, my life would completely change…He loves us!”

She then had to catch her bus, I’m sad to say, so I didn’t get to pray with her. However, this occurrence added even more to the evidence for intense reaping in this city; the people here are so ready for the Gospel.

They are ready for us to proclaim Truth, repentance of sins, and salvation in Jesus!

Though I cannot mention this woman’s name, please pray that she would be saved and would radically follow Jesus, as well as the MANY that we have met in very similar situations!

More stories…

We shared the gospel on a college campus for an entire day. We took part in a children’s ministry, where we teach Bible stories and pray for healing for any of the kids who are hurting (one little girl’s back was healed!), and we also took advantage of a flower market and purchased roses to pass out to women on the street as a tool to share God’s love and the Gospel.

We had numerous people come as close to salvation as possible, so please pray that they would follow through with giving their lives to Jesus completely.

Mariah, a DTS student, also led a couple to salvation in Jesus. After we danced and preached yesterday, a man and woman came up to us and explained to Mariah that they had researched many religions, and they wanted to know why we believe Jesus is the Only True God. She explained the simple Gospel, and they gladly confessed their sins to the Lord, asked for forgiveness, and confessed Jesus as their Lord and Savior!!!

The Lord is really doing a great work in Marseille. We’re having a great time together–our team has such beautiful unity!

We’re looking forward to having a full last week of ministry here before we begin to wrap things up and head back to Redding. Please pray that we would reap much more of this harvest and see many more come to know Jesus as Truth!
