6 Ways to Get Involved with Missions

6 Ways to Get Involved with Missions

“Therefore, GO and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19)

Did you notice something in that verse? Did you notice that we are all called to go? No one is excluded from Jesus’ commission – everyone has the opportunity to join in! But where does that leave you? How can you get involved with the commission and furthering the Gospel?

As you read these helpful ways to get involved, invite the Holy Spirit into the process. Ask Him to speak to you, to tell you how He wants to change the World, and how He wants use you as a world changer.

1. Go into your own neighborhood and just do it.

The first one is obvious. Find the courage, get God’s heart, and GO share the Gospel. Some ways this could look are finding a church group that does evangelism in your city, getting involved with a college group that offers prayer and healing on campus on Friday nights, or even volunteering at a food shelter or soup kitchen! Whether it be finding a group that will motivate you to serve your community, a friend that you can go out with, or if you are able to just find time to do it by yourself, do it. You have skills, time and the ability to impact your city for Christ. All you have to do, is do it!

2. Give financially, prayerfully, practically to missionaries.

If you go to a church, or are a part of any western Christian stream, chances are you know (or can get to know) at least one active missionary. Do your part to get to know them when they are in town, hear what they are doing for the Lord, and learn from their experiences in missions. As you impact missionaries with your love and making them feel supported, they are in turn able to go out and make disciples of nations!

By pouring out to the missionaries you know, you are getting involved and supporting missions.

Here are some creative ways to reach and encourage the missionaries that you know:

  • Give and support them financially and consistently. The money you sow directly sows into the Kingdom of God!
  • Pray and encourage them monthly. Do the extra mile in making sure that there needs are met, or at least prayed for. Send them encouraging messages, ask them how they are doing and actively pray for them.
  • If you are unable to give financially, give to missionaries with the ability and skills that you already have. Make them edifying art. Throw them a fundraiser event. Babysit their children. Fix there car or broken refrigerator. You have skills – think of ways that you can donate your time and skills to bless them!

3. Share your testimony and your relationship with the Lord on your personal social media platforms. Join justice movements that represent Christ!

This way might sound like a bit of a stretch for “missions”, or a bit unnecessary, but honestly, you’d be surprised at the impact you can make by being honest about your relationship with the Lord, and sharing the things that you believe and why you believe in them on your social media platforms.

My challenge to you: Be vulnerable. Open up. Be the light that the World is looking for.

Who knows what could happen when you start the conversation.

There are also amazing organizations that are trying to raise awareness about certain injustice and social movements issues. Do your part in following, sharing and being a part of the honest and real voices that are fueling these justice movements! Some awesome organizations to follow and movements to join are:

  • Fight the New Drug is an Christian group fighting and raising awareness against the effects of pornography @fightthenewdrug
  • The Call is Lou Engle’s prayer movement to end abortion in America @thecall
  • #enditmovement is a social anti-slavery and abolitionist movement that you can participate in #endit #enough @enditmovement
  • Carry the Love; A movement brought by the Circuit Riders dedicated to inspire today’s youth and young adult generation to love radically like Jesus

4. Go on a short-term missions trip or outreach.

Short-term mission trips are awesome opportunities for people who are exploring the idea of becoming a missionary. They are inspiring and eye opening, and they can be life-changing for people around the world. However, there is a right way to do a short term trip. Read this blog, for more information on ways to fruitfully and effectively go on a short-term outreach in a way that is edifying and honoring to the local people.

Here are some awesome in-house opportunities and some friends of ours who are offering short-term missions opportunities that will equip you and actually make a difference in individuals lives across nations:

5. Donate to an organization that is spreading the Gospel!

There are endless, I mean endless, non-profits and missions organizations that are dedicated to bringing God’s kingdom to Earth – it is just a matter of finding one that you can pour into. Get to know the organizations that are reaching out in your city, in your county, in a topic you care about, or a nation that is on your heart. Follow them and be a part of what they are doing by giving to them financially. They can’t do it without people like you, who are willing to support them.

It is also an awesome way to find “your people”. Get to know the volunteers and advocates of that organization, the people that are stirred into action just like you are about topics you care about.

Sowing into ministries is one of the easiest ways to do your part in completing Great Commission.

6. Do a missions training program.

Fair warning, we are a bit biased about this one. Missions training programs are probably the most effective and life-changing ways to get involved with missions! At YWAM Redding, we offer a program called a Discipleship Training School (DTS). It is a 5 month program that is dedicated to leading students to encounter God, become true revivalists and make God known all over the world.

The best parts about our DTS is that students are able to:

  • Be surrounded by a missions oriented community
  • Build a stronger relationship with the Lord before they are sent out
  • Go on a two month cross-cultural outreach that is dedicated on seeing God move in powerful and fruitful ways in regions like Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia
  • Have one on one discipleship and in depth Bible discovery
  • Study and learn about topics like compassion, adventure, ministry to muslims, and worship

There are other organization and YWAM locations that offer missions training programs. Find one that is right for you!

Like I mentioned before; pray about it.

Here are some quick activation questions to start a conversation with the Lord about how you should get involved with completing the Great Commission. Have fun discovering and dreaming with the Lord with what you are called to do!

  • Jesus, how do you want me to get involved with missions? What have you given me that I can give back to serve you and your children?
  • What places are you highlighting to me? What have you put on my heart that I can do something about?
  • God, why do you care about missions? Why should I be involved?

Life with Jesus is Never Boring | My Faith Outreach Story

Life with Jesus is Never Boring | My Faith Outreach Story

The First Step

As students in the School of Islamic Studies, we have hearts to reach the unreached. It requires steps of radical faith in order to successfully reach those who live in the “hardest and darkest” parts of the world. A part of this school is learning to trust God fully and to go where he leads without hesitation. One week of the school, we were commissioned to go out on what we call a faith outreach, just as the disciples did in Luke 9.

“And he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.” (Luke 9:2-6)

Like the disciples, we were sent out in teams with no money, food, or a place to stay. We were instructed to proclaim the Kingdom of God wherever He led us, and to trust the Lord for every provision.

My team headed to Bay Area, with a word of the Lord that we would do three things: love big, have fun, and follow our passions. When God speaks He is always faithful to fulfill. Our journey through faith outreach was filled with just these things.

Loving Extravagantly

On day one, the Lord called us to minister to one of our team member’s family. We were able to reach out to them in a season of hardship. Before this time we knew that we were called to love extravagantly everyone who we met. This specific call of The Lord was fulfilled during this time. We were able to love and champion them in ways that spoke to them in big ways. I even got to teach one of them a worship song on the piano and show her what joy is found in worshiping the Lord. We were able to love them extravagantly.

Later in the week, we were doing evangelism, and we encountered people from all different religions. We talked to Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and everything in between. In conversation, we could have argued or felt responsible for proving our beliefs to be true. However, The Lord spoke to us very specifically that love had to be our only motivation. Because we chose to love, we were able to continue ministering through the opposition. At the end of the day, we finally found someone who was hungry for the gospel. We had a fruitful conversation that would not have happened if the Lord did not remind us to love extravagantly and endlessly.

As we ministered, our team walked in incredible unity, and it is because we loved each other well. I realized that loving big should not just mean loving the lost, but loving our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Having Fun

One day during our outreach, the opportunity to go to Six Flags for free was presented to us! With a word of the Lord to have fun, we knew the He was behind it. The day was filled with joy as we rode roller coasters and evangelized to those in the lines with us.

We got to show others that ministry does not have to be boring and routine. We serve a Lord who cares about our smallest desires and loves to see His children laughing and having fun. Doing life with Jesus is a wild ride! (no pun intended).

God did not only provide our basic necessities, he gave us things to enjoy! One of my favorite moments was getting to eat authentic Syrian food together. God could have just let us eat sandwiches, but I guess He wanted us to taste of His goodness. Literally.

Following Our Passions

We followed our passions during that week wholeheartedly. We are passionate about Houses of Prayer, so we went to one. God used that place to provide for all of our needs!

I am passionate about relational ministry (and coffee dates), so I got coffee with a girl that I had met. We talked for an hour about the gospel, what I believed and what she believed. We are passionate about mercy ministries, and so we served at a homeless shelter. I am passionate about helping women in human trafficking and prostitution, so we did ministry in the red light district. We are passionate about worship, and so we worshiped on the UC Berkeley campus. We even ran into a piano on the concourse!

The Lord constantly provided ways for us to glorify Him in spreading his Kingdom while pursuing our passions.

God loves to use the passions that are already in our hearts.

This Week Changed Me

Throughout this week, I gained new confidence in the faithfulness of God. He showed us that every word that he speaks will come into fruition. As I seek Him and his kingdom here on earth, doors will open and provision will come.

He showed me that when we fix our eyes on him, it is possible to walk in perfect unity with other believers and to love each other well. I found that people will not always agree with me, and they might reject the gospel, but that is okay. That does not change its power and it does not change who Jesus is. Jesus showed me that ministry is not boring and burnout is not inevitable! This week was fun, restful, and refreshing.

Going into faith outreach, I was quite nervous, but if I had known then what I know now, I would have been far from fearful. I was scared of the uncertainty: where I would stay and how I would eat. We might have been more comfortable if we had brought money with us “just in case” God did not show up. However, I have realized that when we take a leap of faith and surrender our “plan B”, God always comes through. Now as I continue my walk with The Lord and look towards to long term ministry in unreached nations, I feel certain that when He calls me to do something, He will also equip me. Where God guides, he provides, and I can literally trust Him with my life!

You too can walk in radical faith!

I want to invite you to join us in a Discipleship Training School where you will learn more about what it means to walk boldly and to trust the Lord with your life. If you have done a DTS, join us for the School of Supernatural Frontier Missions and embark on a faith outreach week where you will get to experience the Lord’s faithfulness first hand!

“5 Thing I Learned During the First 5 Weeks of my DTS” | Student Blog

“5 Thing I Learned During the First 5 Weeks of my DTS” | Student Blog

1. There is Beauty in Community

As a nineteen year old girl who grew up with five brothers, I was challenged with the idea of living with twenty plus girls in a community house. I came to God with my fears asking questions “God, what if I don’t get along with anyone here? What if I don’t make any friends?” He replied, “But what if you do?”

Before my DTS started I thought of my classmates as ‘different’; unable to connect and relate to them because of their differences. At least that was the fear I had, but since starting my DTS in July I’ve been challenged with the idea that God has created me and the people around me to relate, to connect and to build beautiful relationship with each other. Despite our different cultures, despite our different personalities or church backgrounds, we all have one thing in common. We are completely infatuated and radically in love with the King of Kings!

Something that helped me at the start of DTS was remembering that God had placed me and my peers there for a specific purpose. The people I’ve met here I know I will be friends with for a lifetime. God asked me to take the first step of faith and in my obedience came blessing! And what a blessing have my fellow DTS classmates and friends been!

2. Vulnerability Brings Freedom

During our third week in DTS our weekly topic was Openness and Brokenness. This week is a beautiful time to take five days to go deeper with God into the things that have hurt you in your past. It is a time to be vulnerable with the people in your class. We took time sharing and understanding any lies misconceptions we were believing about Father God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I know what you are thinking because I was thinking the same things: “to uncover and openly confess burdens and hurts from your youth is scary and painful and I don’t want to do it”. Yes– it was hard, but also–yes, it led me into a beautiful encounter with the Lord. I’ve learned that God is so so gentle and He desires to hold you and comfort you in the midst of your mess. Through the process of inner healing, God didn’t just take away the pain I had but He will replaced it with hope, love, joy and FREEDOM.

Openness and brokenness has been my favorite week so far because I was able to address hurts and disappointments in my life that I was never aware of, and as a result I was able to walk in deeper freedom and intimacy with The Father. There is nothing more freeing than giving up the things that are hindering you from getting to know who God really is. God wants us to be vulnerable with Him, and the people around us, so that He can take our hand and lead us from Glory to Glory and we can walk in our true identity.

3. The True Power of Worship

Before I came to YWAM I was battling with the question, ‘What causes powerful worship?’ As I entered into a new season at DTS God quickly answered this question. He revealed that worship has everything to do with the posture of your heart. It isn’t depended on talent or a big stage.

Walking into the first night of corporate worship here at YWAM Redding I had no idea what to expect. I made my way into the sanctuary where about 50 people were gathered–the music started and all of a sudden my focus shifted. The presence of God was so present in the room and it demanded my complete and total attention– I grew silent in awe and reverence of his His utter nearness. I learned quickly that powerful worship isn’t about an outward appearance–how you move or what you say.

DTS has shown me that it is okay to worship in our own way, God does not look at how high I raise my hands, He looks at the openness of my heart. Worship isn’t about what the person next to me is doing, and there’s no reason to compare. It’s a time when Jesus and I get to have an intimate connection; it’s about expressing my love toward Him.

DTS is such a unique period of your life where you are constantly surrounded by people who adore The Father and are consumed by their love for God. People here are hungry to worship Him, and I am eager to continue in this season and burn for the Lord right alongside them. I have learned to let my heart burn and be motivated by His love and to let go of outward appearance. This is what creates powerful worship.

4. God is my Ultimate Provider

A major area of doing a DTS is raising the finances for your tuition and outreach phase. I had a mindset that I needed to work and provide all my money for my school before my DTS started. This was not only untrue but through this mindset I was also hindering the Lord from showing up in my life as my ultimate Provider. I wasn’t trusting God fully with my finances.

I held on tight to my money instead of giving God the opportunity to show me that I could trust Him with everything, including my finances. By the first week I found myself in need of finances for my outreach. It was definitely ordained by God to be done this way because it put me in a position to give God the role as my only source of provision. God has shown me that He will always come through, He is faithful in all things! Not only did He provide the amount I needed, He provide an abundance! God takes care of us when we let Him!

A big way God provides is through the generosity of others around you. I’ve learned to humble myself enough to ask people to help contribute towards my call to YWAM and although it can be hard to ask others for money, having faith in the Lord to provide is an essential part of mission work.

Relying on Jesus in this way not only benefited my finances and grew my relationships but it inspired me to be more generous with everything that I have! I know that the money I’m given is not my own, it belongs to the Lord. The Father loves providing for His children and one of the biggest mistakes we can make is hindering Him from pouring out His goodness over each part of our lives.

5. God Speaks to Me

One of the most common topics talked about in YWAM is hearing God’s voice. Growing up the idea of hearing God’s voice was not an unfamiliar to me. However, I still struggled with knowing if I was truly hearing from the Lord or if it was my own thoughts.

Something I’ve learned going into my DTS is that the more you know the character of God, the easier it is to distinguish His voice. The more you pursue the presence of God the more your ears will open up to His voice. It becomes easier to discern the Lord’s voice versus your own thoughts or words from the enemy.

When you know who God is–His character and nature–you will know if you are hearing something that goes against who His Word declares him to be. Since starting my DTS, I’ve grown confidently in my ability to hear God’s voice and I discovered that I can hear His voice more clearly than I ever thought I could.

When you accept Jesus into your heart the Holy Spirit comes and dwells within you–this, along with God’s Word is your source of comfort, peace, and wisdom in every situation. John 10: 27-28 says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” What a promise! Never underestimate the desire of the Father to speak clearly to you. Have confidence as a child of God that you know His voice better than you think.

What is the Lord teaching you in your current season? Are these areas that you want to grow in? Have you considered dedicating a season to fully commit to the Lord? A Muslim Man’s Journey to Salvation | Outreach Testimony

A Muslim Man’s Journey to Salvation | Outreach Testimony

Our current Discipleship Training School outreach team was just in Russia for the World Cup. YWAM outreaches teams have been going to large international events for years to do ministry and reach out to the nations that attend the event. Our team had an amazing time using the World Cup event as an open door to minister to people from unreached Muslim nations that have never had a chance to hear the Gospel.

Here is an inspiring testimony from their outreach in Russia written by one of our current students:

“On one of our days during ministry in Russia, my wife and myself had a chance to go out on ministry together. We began our time praying, we specifically asked God to lead us to people whose hearts were ripe, we wanted to reach someone who wanted it!

As we were out and praying for direction we both felt led to stop and chat with a man (that we will call Ken) at a park. We quickly found out that Ken was from Yemen! Which is a majority Muslim nation and currently unreached that is currently in a civil war. He was studying in Russia as there are not very many opportunities to study in his home nation. After briefly talking to him we felt like this was an open door to hearing the Gospel.

Ken came from a Muslim background but during the conversation we found out that he was way more curious about experiencing God. Which is amazing because in most conversations with Former Muslims or current Muslims there is usually an aspect of  defending Islam that takes place in conversation. Later we found out that one of his friends from Africa had been talking to him about Jesus and was reading the gospels with him! His roommate has moved away. Ken now lives with other Muslim men. My wife and I were delighted to be part of the story God was weaving in his life since his heart had clearly been prepared through all the discussions he had with his former roommate, it was an answer to prayer.

Ken was interested in a faith that was tangible and experiential, so my wife and I shared our testimony. After we had a chance to share he exclaimed “how can I have that?” We shared with Ken about accepting Jesus. He was afraid to pray in public because of the laws against praying in public in Russia. Ken wanted to know how to ensure that He had received Jesus once he prayed on his own. We explained about our own experiences of being born again and filled with the Spirit. We had also shared with Ken about our own experiences of God speaking to us through dreams, and he said he really wanted that. We prayed that he would be able to receive dreams and revelation from the Lord. Ken left awestruck as he walked back home.” – Ebby (current DTS student)

Romans 10:9-10 says because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”

While Ken may not have prayed a prayer of salvation he did confess with his mouth that he wanted Jesus and wanted to have the Lord in his life. He understood the full story of the death and resurrection of Jesus and had a good understanding of what it looks like to be born again. Ken even wanted to make sure that he could be sure that he was able to receive Jesus as his savior! He didn’t have to pray a prayer to enter into salvation. The only requirement we see in scripture is confessing that Jesus is Lord and that he was raised from the dead.

Now all of heaven is rejoicing at Ken’s story to redemption and salvation! We are so excited to be a part of welcoming him home!

If you would like to learn more about what it looks like to minister to Muslims you should check out our school of Islamic Studies! The heartbeat of this school is to equip our students to go out and share the Gospel within unreached people groups. Click here to read more information!

End Bible Poverty Now

End Bible Poverty Now

This past month our base leadership team was invited to a conference in Kona, Hawaii. The conference gathered leaders from various YWAM bases who have been actively involved in Bible distribution and ending Bible poverty. Together they learned about the vision and heart behind the YWAM covenant, End Bible Poverty Now. They learned about the partnerships that YWAM has created with foundations such as Wycliffe, Faith Comes by Hearing, The Jesus Film and others, who are actively involved with ending Bible poverty. Together, they are all working towards one goal – the translation and distribution of The Gospel unto the last of the nations. Everyone has a different role and part to play in this vision, but together they have all agreed to:

  1. Pray
  2. Translate
  3. Publish
  4. Distribute
  5. Educate
  6. Motivate

These six things are what make up the End Bible Poverty Now Covenant, and YWAM Redding is beyond excited to have the privilege of taking part in this!

The Back Story

1967

The End Bible Poverty Now movement started with a small spark in Loren Cunningham’s mind in 1967. He was on a trip in Mexico when their bus broke down, so they started to share the Gospel in the local village. While there, woman wearing a faded red dress approached them and asked for a Bible. She shared with them that she couldn’t find one in her own village or in any of the surrounding villages. Loren and his team searched and finally found one Spanish Bible to give to her.

As they were driving away, Loren reflected on this situation, and God began to speak to him. He showed Loren the great need to bring Bibles to nations and people who don’t have access to the Word of God in their language. He contacted the Bible Society and shortly thereafter they distributed 50,000 Bibles in Mexico.

1983 and 2020

President Reagan declared 1983 to be the year of the Bible. In the two years that followed, the entirety of Hawaii received the Word of God. In 1999 Wycliffe Bible Translators declared that the translations for the last nations who have yet to receive a Bible in their own language would be finished by 2025. This is when the term “Eradicating Bible Poverty” was coined. Shortly after this, in 2003, Loren declared that every remaining language without a bible would begin being translated by 2020. This is how the official goal of End Bible Poverty Now was established. We want at least a portion of the Bible to be published and accessible to people in every country, tribe, and nation by the year 2033.

Becoming a Bible Hub

YWAM Redding is proud to announce that in our partnership with this movement, we are officially a “Bible Hub” for Ending Bible Poverty Now! This means that we are a west coast resource center for the storage and distribution of Bibles! In addition to hard copies, we will have the ability to produce Bible SD cards in any translated language. We will also be able to provide Jesus Film projectors and other materials to outreach teams. Surrounding bases can request any of these resources so that, together, we can get God’s Word to the nations!
